Cancún, Quintana Roo — Quintana Roo ranks among Mexico’s top five states for theft and fraud in vehicle sales, according to Oscar Torres, a specialist in vehicle transaction facilitation.
During a press conference in Cancún, Torres reported that two out of every ten attempted sales in the state currently show some type of irregularity or criminal activity.
While larger population centers like Mexico City, the State of Mexico, Monterrey, and Guadalajara lead in total numbers, Quintana Roo shows high vulnerability due to criminals’ versatility.
Scammers use methods ranging from bad checks and fake transfers to selling vehicles of foreign origin or units with theft reports.
The specialist detailed that criminals have perfected their techniques, even being able to disable GPS systems to avoid vehicle tracking.
Torres noted that no specific vehicle model carries higher risk anymore. While criminals previously focused on models like the Tsuru or red Jetta, any vehicle on the market is now susceptible to criminal targeting.
To avoid becoming victims of these crimes, officials recommend that citizens not advertise their vehicles on social media or place phone numbers on windows.
Similarly, they urge conducting transactions in secure locations, with the State Prosecutor’s Office facilities being the most recommended point, where free verification of a vehicle’s legal status is also offered.
Finally, Torres highlighted that approximately 30 percent of buyers prefer purchasing new vehicles from dealerships to guarantee legal security.
For those opting for used vehicles, he emphasized the importance of checking that they are not vehicles recovered from total loss accidents that have been repaired for sale without informing the buyer.
