Xul-Há, Quintana Roo — A case of alleged animal cruelty has sparked outrage on social media and prompted intervention by authorities in Quintana Roo after a three-month-old Chihuahua puppy named "Osito" was tied to a drone and lifted several meters into the air. The incident, captured on video, has drawn widespread condemnation.
Incident Details and Public Outcry
The event occurred on April 24 in the community of Xul-Há, within the municipality of Othón P. Blanco. Footage of the visibly frightened puppy suspended mid-air circulated rapidly on social media, inciting anger among users, animal rights groups, and advocates for animal welfare.
Facing mounting public pressure, state authorities acted swiftly. The Attorney General’s Office, the Environmental Protection Agency (PPA), and the Secretariat of Ecology and Environment (SEMA) collaborated to locate and rescue "Osito." The puppy is now out of danger, receiving specialized veterinary care under institutional custody.
Legal Proceedings and Ongoing Investigation
The dog’s owner has been summoned by the Public Prosecutor’s Office to provide a statement. Authorities have opened an investigation to determine whether the incident constitutes animal cruelty and to pursue legal action accordingly.
For now, "Osito" remains in state custody as the legal process unfolds. Civil society groups and animal protection organizations are calling for exemplary penalties to prevent similar cases of cruelty in the future, emphasizing that such acts must not go unpunished.
