Puerto Morelos, Mexico — Municipal President Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz has inaugurated 260 new LED lighting fixtures in the Parque Fundadores and surrounding areas of the Casco Antiguo (Historic District), with an investment of 3 million pesos from the Fideicomiso de Administración del Derecho de Saneamiento Ambiental (DSA).
“This project, which was highly anticipated and requested, is part of the Puerto Morelos Brilla program, included in the Municipal Development Plan 2024-2027, with the commitment to install more than 3,000 LED lights throughout the municipality,” she stated.
The Municipal President emphasized the importance of inaugurating the lighting in the municipality’s most tourist-frequented site, where thousands of domestic and foreign tourists pass through each year. This addresses requests from hoteliers, service providers, as well as fishermen, boaters, artisans, and merchants in the area.
“By improving the lighting, we aim to modernize Puerto Morelos and provide a higher quality urban image to generate more tranquility, security, and comfort for residents and visitors coming to the Casco Antiguo,” affirmed Blanca Merari.
She noted that projects like this strengthen the quality of life for the people of Puerto Morelos, a priority of this and the previous administration, which has worked on projects that address community needs, benefit it, and boost the growth of the tourism sector.
Leonel Salazar Trejo, Secretary of Public Services, indicated that LED lighting fixtures were installed, using cutting-edge technology that contributes to environmental care. He specified that the lighting renewal covered Parque Fundadores, Ventana al Mar, and Muelle de Pescadores, as well as the streets José María Morelos with Javier Rojo Gómez and Rafael E. Melgar, between Tulum and Isla Mujeres, benefiting the entire community.
“The modernity and security achieved with this lighting are extremely important, in addition to providing a new image to the Casco Antiguo,” he asserted.
Javier Hernández Santillán, President of the Colegio Portomorelense de Ingenieros Civiles, acknowledged the work of the Municipal President in both the previous and current administrations. “We can see how public resources are invested intelligently,” he emphasized.
He also pointed out that what makes a tourist destination attractive is its natural and cultural wealth, as well as the quality of infrastructure and services provided, aspects to which public resources should be allocated, seeking a balance between the natural, social, and urban environments, as together they constitute the environment.
At the event, the Municipal President was accompanied by Karen Alejandra Román Flores, Regional Technical Secretary for Peacebuilding and Security; councilor Antonio Chuc Pech; citizens Valerie Vilchis Moreno and Viridiana Canto Vegovi; and Hunab Ku Juan Martín Soriano Canté, President of the Unión de Artesanos.
