Puerto Morelos, Mexico — Thirty police officers from Puerto Morelos have completed a specialized first responder training course aimed at improving their initial response to crimes and emergencies, municipal officials announced.

The training, part of an institutional strengthening program backed by both municipal and state governments, focused on proper procedures for officers who are often the first to arrive at crime scenes. Puerto Morelos Mayor Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz emphasized that continuous training is crucial for community protection and crime prevention.

“Having police officers who are well-trained and follow established protocols increases public trust and improves victim assistance,” Mayor Tziu Muñoz said. “Social proximity guides our officers’ actions, and they’re typically the first to respond when a crime occurs.”

The 12-hour course, conducted over three sessions at the State Prosecutor’s Office auditorium, was organized in coordination with the Quintana Roo State Prosecutor’s Office and supported by Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa. Thirty officers from Isla Mujeres also participated in the training.

Critical Role in Legal Proceedings

During the training, specialized prosecutor Juan Martínez warned that incorrect actions by first responders could potentially lead to suspects being acquitted. He explained that every action taken by the initial responding officer directly impacts how a case develops within Mexico’s accusatory penal system.

The curriculum covered multiple essential topics including:

  • Proper handling of suspects caught in the act
  • Completion of the standardized police report
  • Justified use of force
  • Preservation of crime scenes
  • Human rights considerations
  • Levels of contact with suspects
  • Suspicious person searches
  • Standard police response protocols

Ongoing Professional Development

Mayor Tziu Muñoz noted that her administration has strengthened security through innovation, equipment upgrades, technology implementation, and improved working conditions for officers. She described security and order as fundamental pillars for achieving social peace in the municipality.

Authorities confirmed that another group of 30 Puerto Morelos police officers will receive the same training next week as part of the continuing professional development program.
