Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo — Puerto Morelos has launched a permanent beach cleanup operation targeting sargassum that has washed ashore at this popular tourist destination, with Mayor Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz leading the coordinated effort.
Municipal workers began removing the macroalgae early in the morning along the coastline, focusing particularly on Ventana al Mar beach, one of the most visited spots for tourists and residents.
The operation involved 50 municipal workers coordinated by the Secretariat of Environment, Animal Welfare and Sustainable Mobility and the Federal Maritime-Terrestrial Zone, along with 20 Mexican Navy personnel who assisted with sargassum removal and management.
Coordinated Operation Between Authorities
The cleanup initiative was organized by Environment Secretary Aimee Rodríguez Vivas and Zofemat Director Gerardo Rosas García, who coordinated operational staff participation.
Mayor Tziu Muñoz stated that coordination between municipal, federal and military authorities allows for quick response to this natural phenomenon that annually affects Mexico’s Caribbean coast.
“Joint work allows us to keep our beaches clean and in good condition for residents and visitors,” the mayor said.
Weekly Cleanup Sessions Planned
The mayor explained that beach cleanup sessions will occur every weekend, with public servants participating and citizens invited to join the environmental efforts.
This strategy supplements the municipality’s daily sargassum collection activities along Puerto Morelos’ coastline.
“The beaches belong to everyone. By combining efforts between government, the Armed Forces and citizens, we can keep them clean and protect our natural environment,” she expressed.
Municipal authorities reiterated their goal of preserving the destination’s natural beauty and ensuring clean beaches, one of the Mexican Caribbean’s main tourist attractions.
The municipality reported it will continue permanent actions to address sargassum in Puerto Morelos, a phenomenon that typically intensifies during spring and summer seasons in Quintana Roo.
