José María Morelos, MX — Residents of the Ruta de las Iglesias have reactivated their intention to elevate the mayoralty to a municipality, a demand that, according to their representatives, has accumulated eight requests submitted to different state administrations.
Emigdio Nahuát Tuyub, from the group promoting the proposal, explained that although the creation of the “Jacinto Pat” municipality is being promoted from Tihosuco, the communities consider Sabán to be the most strategic point to lead a new Mayan demarcation.
“Sabán is in the center, which is why we are asking for it to be the municipality,” he affirmed.
The initiative includes 14 communities located between José María Morelos and Felipe Carrillo Puerto, among them Sacalaca, San Juan Oriente, San Felipe, Tabasco, Xquerol, Xcabil, San Juan Oriente, Dzoyolá, San Francisco, Filomeno Mata, and Rancho Viejo, whose inhabitants signed the request addressed to the State Government.
The promoters indicate that the lack of support for the countryside is the main reason for the petition.
“We are farmers; they give us fertilizer, but it doesn’t work if there is no rain,” commented Emigdio.
They consider it urgent to have irrigation units that allow them to take advantage of fertile lands and improve agricultural production.
They also highlighted that the area has commercial access to tourist destinations such as Cancún and the Riviera Maya, which would strengthen the sale of products.
The residents emphasized that Sabán also has archaeological remains, such as a palace and ancient ceremonial halls, which represents additional tourism potential.
They affirm that the population supports the municipalization to access more resources and improve services. The proposal is once again under state analysis.
