Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A power outage on Thursday knocked out electricity at the offices of the CFE (Federal Electricity Commission) in Playa del Carmen, leaving customers, staff and nearby businesses without service.
The failure struck the CFE branch in the Gonzalo Guerrero neighborhood, where dozens of people had gathered to make payments, sign new contracts, request reconnections and handle other paperwork tied to their electricity service.
When the supply was cut, the equipment and computer systems used to serve customers stopped working, forcing staff to suspend a number of transactions until power returned.
The outage also shut down the building’s air conditioning, adding to the discomfort of those waiting inside.
The blackout was not limited to the CFE offices. Residents and businesses in Gonzalo Guerrero, a central area with heavy commercial activity, also reported disruptions.
On the same day, officials reported a separate supply cut in Villas del Sol, one of Playa del Carmen’s most populous districts, which was reportedly linked to maintenance work.
Power failures have become a recurring problem in 2026. According to tallies circulated during the current hot season, at least 20 blackouts hit different parts of Playa del Carmen between March and mid-August.
Among the neighborhoods and housing developments affected in earlier episodes were Xcacel, Paseos Sisal and Misión de las Flores.
The repeated cuts have drawn complaints from residents and business owners, mainly over the damage to homes, shops and services that depend on the grid.
