Cancún, Quintana Roo — At least one person was killed in a shooting early Sunday morning in downtown Cancún. Police responded to the scene at the Plaza de Toros, where the driver of a white car was found deceased.
The shooting occurred outside the plaza's parking lot on Bonampak Avenue shortly before dawn. Forensic personnel were on site for over an hour collecting evidence. The body of the deceased, who has not been identified, was removed from the vehicle while a tow truck waited on the avenue.
Local authorities have announced the initiation of an investigation into what they are classifying as an aggravated homicide. The Cancún police department has intensified its presence in the area in an attempt to locate those responsible. Authorities have kept the name of the deceased confidential, along with the details surrounding the man's death.
In a briefing early Sunday morning, the State Attorney General's Office (FGE) stated that "the Attorney General's Office of Quintana Roo (FGE Quintana Roo) reports the opening of an investigation into the aggravated homicide of a male individual whose identity is being withheld."
"The incident occurred in the early morning hours in the municipality of Benito Juárez. Following this event, and in close coordination with the Interinstitutional Group, investigative efforts are being intensified to locate and apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
"The Attorney General's Office of Quintana Roo firmly reaffirms its commitment to the administration of justice, the rule of law, and the principle of zero impunity."
