Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Mayor Estefania Mercado met with Uruguay’s ambassador to Mexico, Santiago Wins Arnabal, on Thursday to finalize plans for the Uruguayan national soccer team’s training camp in the city ahead of the World Cup.
During the meeting, Mercado highlighted the honor of Playa del Carmen being chosen as a base for one of the world’s most storied soccer teams.
“We will welcome Uruguay with open arms because in Playa del Carmen we want them to feel at home,” Mercado said. “We are a city prepared to host major international events and to share our hospitality, infrastructure, and warmth with the world.”
The visit reinforces ties between Playa del Carmen and Uruguay, and underscores the municipal government’s commitment to positioning the destination as a modern, safe city ready for world-class sporting events.
