Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The roar of wheels on fresh concrete marked the start of a new era for Quintana Roo as Playa del Carmen officially opened a world-class skating rink, positioning itself as Mexico’s new capital for speed skating. The inauguration coincided with the launch of the National Interassociations Championship 2026, drawing over 500 athletes from across the country.

Mayor Estefanía Mercado kicked off the event at Poliforum, where representatives from 23 states gathered for the competition, which also serves as a qualifier for the 2026 National Olympics. In a statement, Mercado highlighted the significance of the new facility, calling it a historic project designed to open doors for youth and place the city on the map for major international events.

The rink, praised by experts and delegates for its technical design, elevates Solidaridad to the level of top global venues. Athletes noted that the high-quality surface will lead to better times, fewer injuries, and training opportunities that meet international standards.

In an emotional moment, world champion Jorge Luis Martínez announced his official retirement from skating during the event. Martínez, an icon who has represented Mexico on the global stage, thanked the community and encouraged young skaters to persevere, emphasizing that success goes beyond medals.

Officials, including Jacobo Arzate from the Quintana Roo Sports Commission and Nicolás Santibáñez from the Mexican Roller Skating Federation, credited local leadership for making the tournament one of the most attended in recent discipline history. The presence of national champion Vivian Michelle Morfín and support from local sports director Alberto López underscored the city’s commitment to backing athletic talent.

The championship, running through the weekend, aims to foster community and economic development through sports, reinforcing Playa del Carmen’s role as a hub for both tourism and athletic excellence.
