Playa del Carmen Transito to Resume Issuance of Driver’s Licenses

the Licensing IMOVEQROO in Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen, Q. Roo — The Municipal Traffic Department in Playa del Carmen will soon resume issuing driver’s licenses, following approval by the City Council for Mayor Estefanía Mercado to sign a cooperation agreement with the Quintana Roo Mobility Institute (Imoveqroo).

Municipal Secretary General Luis Herrera Quiam welcomed the move, noting that it restores a function previously handled at the local level. He emphasized, however, that the formal agreement will define the specific responsibilities, procedures, and scope of the municipality’s role in processing licenses.

“This is great news for Playa del Carmen. It was the last municipality in Quintana Roo that had not signed a collaboration agreement with the Institute of Mobility. For various reasons it wasn’t done under the previous administration, and initial structural changes within Imoveqroo delayed it further,” Herrera said in an interview.

Although the agreement has not yet been signed, the council vote authorizes the mayor to finalize the collaboration. Once in place, the Traffic Department—currently undergoing administrative changes—will take charge of issuing official licenses.

On the question of costs, Herrera recalled that past programs included discounts and financial assistance for those in need. Whether such benefits continue will depend on the terms of the new agreement.

Authorities expect the reinstated service to simplify the process for residents and visitors alike, eliminating the need to travel to other municipalities to obtain a license. Officials say the change will reduce waiting times and improve service for the public.
