Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Municipal revenue in Playa del Carmen increased by 25 to 30% last month, driven by a discount campaign that will continue through August, according to Treasurer Guillermo Brahms González.
“Many people have come in person to the Treasury offices; revenue has increased properly,” Brahms said. “This campaign has been very beneficial.”
The initiative has allowed the municipality to maintain its pace of work in services, public works, and meeting financial obligations, he explained.
Officials expect even better results in August, as economic activity picks up with the recent decline in sargassum seaweed on local beaches. “That is magnificent for us. As we well know, Playa del Carmen and Quintana Roo live off tourism, and this is an incentive,” Brahms stated.
The announcement by President Claudia Sheinbaum during her recent visit to the region gives confidence that more effective actions will be taken to prevent next season from repeating the current sargassum problem, he added.
“I think they had left us a bit alone. Sargassum is a complex issue that we cannot tackle only at the municipal level,” Brahms said. “The president said it. She is aware of the solution, which is to prevent it from reaching the coasts.”
On regulatory matters, Brahms said he has already met with business chambers, with discussions focusing on updating several regulations, including civil protection rules. “More than complaining, they want to give their opinion and offer solutions,” he said. “There are regulations, I agree, that are obsolete and need to be updated. There will be working groups to address that.”
