Playa del Carmen Ranks Second in HIV Cases in Quintana Roo, Official Says

A health worker prepares rapid HIV tests during a community testing drive in Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Playa del Carmen has the second-highest number of HIV cases in Quintana Roo, trailing only Benito Juárez, the municipality that includes Cancún, according to Ryan Espinoza, the city’s director of Sexual Diversity.

Espinoza based the ranking on recent data from Comusida, the Municipal Committee for the Response to HIV and AIDS.

Officials Push for Testing

Espinoza urged residents to get tested and to stay informed about the virus. He said its presence in the state makes it necessary to strengthen prevention efforts and bring testing drives directly to the community.

The municipal Health Department is already running activities in schools and public spaces, including bus terminals, to extend the reach of information and testing services, he said.

The Sexual Diversity Directorate, meanwhile, gives talks at schools and works with a range of associations to organize HIV testing days, part of an effort to help more people learn their health status.

No Case Numbers Released

Espinoza did not specify how many cases the ranking involves or which period the data covers. He centered his appeal on broadening access to information and encouraging residents to take part in detection efforts.
