Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Mayor Estefanía Mercado has affirmed that Playa del Carmen is fully prepared to face the 2025 rainy and tropical cyclone season, citing strengthened emergency response capabilities and a prevention-focused strategy to safeguard local families.
Strengthening Civil Protection Efforts
During an inspection of the municipal Civil Protection, Risk Prevention, and Fire Department facilities, accompanied by its head, Darwin Covarrubias, Mayor Mercado emphasized her administration’s commitment to protecting residents.
“We are a government that started strong, and the challenge is to maintain that momentum with concrete results. From day one, we understood that prevention is the most solid path to building a safe city,” Mercado stated.
She reiterated that her administration views civil protection not as an expense but as an investment in public safety. “We assess priorities daily, and civil protection will remain among them because development cannot exist without security,” she added.
Infrastructure and Readiness
Mercado praised the Civil Protection team and the Fire Department as “silent leaders who save lives” and announced plans for further training, equipment upgrades, and strategic partnerships. “Our goal is for Playa del Carmen to become a regional benchmark in civil protection,” she said.
Darwin Covarrubias, Secretary of Civil Protection, reported that the municipality currently has 39 temporary shelters distributed across Playa del Carmen and Puerto Aventuras, with a total capacity for 33,874 people, all ready for activation in case of emergencies.
The department’s operational resources include:
- 140 personnel
- 2 ambulances
- 3 water tankers
- 6 pickup trucks
- 1 rescue truck
- 1 rapid response vehicle
- 1 aerial reconnaissance drone
Upcoming Professional Development Initiatives
Covarrubias also revealed that Playa del Carmen will host two major events:
- The International Firefighters Congress
- The International Civil Protection Congress (scheduled for February 2026), featuring experts from Latin America and the United States.
Through these measures, Mercado’s administration aims to reinforce a comprehensive civil protection strategy centered on prevention, timely response, and coordinated efforts to ensure the safety and confidence of Playa del Carmen’s families.
