Playa del Carmen Mayor Estefanía Mercado attends ceremonies in Chetumal marking the 52nd anniversary of Quintana Roo as a free and sovereign state

Chetumal, Quintana Roo — Playa del Carmen Mayor Estefanía Mercado joined Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa in Chetumal for ceremonies marking the 52nd anniversary of Quintana Roo’s establishment as a free and sovereign state, honoring the generations who shaped the region’s history and identity.

“As a woman born in Chetumal, I feel deeply proud of our roots, our people and the founding families who, through hard work and tenacity, taught us to love this land,” Mercado said.

The mayor highlighted the growth Quintana Roo has recorded over its 52 years as a federal entity and acknowledged the work carried out by different levels of government to meet the needs of families across the state.

Mercado said the anniversary offered a chance to recognize the generations of women and men who have helped build the state while reaffirming a commitment to policies that generate wellbeing and opportunity for residents.

“Today we celebrate our history, we honor those who opened the path for us and we embrace with hope the great future we will build together,” she added.

She also expressed satisfaction at joining the governor and representatives of the state’s political and social sectors for the occasion. “I am very happy to accompany our governor and the entire political class of Quintana Roo who have come to celebrate the 52nd anniversary of the state,” she said.

Mercado pointed to the changes underway in Playa del Carmen, citing advances in security, social and sports infrastructure, the recovery of public spaces, improvements to the urban landscape and a strengthened tourism sector.

The festivities opened with the raising of the monumental Quintana Roo flag at the Plaza Cívica on the Explanada de la Bandera. Mercado then attended a solemn session of the State Congress, where officials read the decree under which Quintana Roo was established as a free and sovereign state and an integral part of the federation.

As part of her agenda, the mayor took part in a meeting of the state security roundtable, where she reported on progress achieved in Playa del Carmen and the investment earmarked to combat crime.
