Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Mayor Estefanía Mercado delivered 150 tool kits and uniforms to federal beach management staff on Saturday to strengthen sargassum cleanup operations along the city’s coastline.
The equipment handover took place at Playa Fundadores, where the mayor praised the daily work of operational personnel involved in collecting the seaweed and recognized their constant effort to maintain tourist areas in optimal condition.
“To date, 5,538 tons of sargassum have already been collected in Playa del Carmen,” Mercado said. “Behind that effort is a great team that works every day, from very early, to care for one of our city’s greatest treasures: our beaches. Today we recognize that work with the delivery of 150 uniform and tool kits to our ZOFEMAT team.”
She emphasized that caring for the natural environment is a shared task between government and citizens, calling for public participation in beach conservation.
“Caring for our beaches isn’t the task of just a few; that’s why we’re issuing an open invitation,” she added.
The initiative forms part of the municipal government’s comprehensive strategy to address sargassum influx, a phenomenon that recurrently affects the Mexican Caribbean coast, and aims to improve the response capacity of operational staff.
Municipal authorities participated in the event, including Secretary of Sustainable Environment and Climate Change Kandy Joana Mendoza Ramírez and ZOFEMAT Director Irving Rafael Lili Madrigal.
