Playa del Carmen, Mexico — Roberto Rojo, a member of the Civil Association Cenotes Urbanos, stated that there is an urgent need to advance the City Museum project, which should reflect the city’s history, natural environment, and cultural identity. He emphasized that the city deserves a dissemination space worthy of this world-class destination.
No Museum Tells the City’s Story
The interviewee acknowledged that the Sayab Planetarium currently plays a relevant role in scientific dissemination but stressed that it does not replace a comprehensive museum that narrates the city’s history and its relationship with the jungle, caves, culture, and marine life.
“Until now, Playa del Carmen does not have a museum. We have the planetarium, which has a very important trajectory of dissemination, but something that speaks about the city we deserve as citizens, as a city, as a population, we still do not have it. Recently, there has been talk about a shark museum. Playa del Carmen has shark populations, which is a worldwide tourist attraction,” said Rojo.
Call for Citizen Participation
He called on citizens to inform themselves, give their opinion, and demand the spaces that, he said, an established city already deserves. He emphasized that access to dignified cultural infrastructure not only strengthens the social fabric but also contributes to more harmonious urban planning.
“Let us give our opinion, let us inform ourselves, let us demand what we already deserve as an established city, which is the dignity of fair and correct spaces that contribute greatly to society and allow us to integrate and shape our city to be what we all want: a beautiful, safe city with culture integrated into nature,” he added.
