Playa del Carmen, Mexico — Municipal cemeteries are now in the preparation phase to receive hundreds of families during the upcoming Day of the Dead festivities scheduled for October 31 to November 2, according to Abraham Sánchez Benítez, the official in charge of cemeteries and funeral homes for Public Services.

"There will be religious acts and families will bring food, drinks, and incense to the vaults, as they do every year," he stated in an interview.

He said that during those days, the cemeteries will remain open 24 hours a day to facilitate access for those wishing to visit their deceased.

Furthermore, he revealed that the objective is to guarantee a suitable environment, and for this reason, deep maintenance work is already being carried out, including painting, washing of walkways, and general cleaning.

Regarding capacity, the cemetery in the Colosio neighborhood is practically full, with only 20 spaces available for new burials. However, there are additional niches that are in the process of being delivered to temporarily expand availability.

Regarding the construction of a new cemetery, the official confirmed that the project is still moving forward. "It is necessary because the Colosio cemetery will soon reach its limit and we must be prepared," he affirmed.

The official asked visitors to collaborate with the cleaning efforts and to avoid leaving trash during their visits.
