Playa del Carmen Seizes 25 Items Daily in Tourist Zone Cleanup

Playa del Carmen, Mexico — The Directorate of Fiscalization and Collections has been generating up to 25 seizures per day through its operations, according to its head, Julián Lara.

He stated that the first three months of the year will be dedicated to organizing the commerce that remains in the city’s central area, as vendors along Juárez, Constituyentes, Décima, and 30th Avenues were previously removed.

Lara said the goal is to cause as little disruption as possible, acknowledging that vendors also have the right to provide for their families, but a radical change was needed in Playa del Carmen’s downtown area.

Additionally, the Secretariat of Civil Protection will be responsible for conducting a risk assessment in the area where these mobile vendors operate, as many place their tables in vehicle lanes, putting people at risk, he added.

He explained that vendors whose stalls were secured underwent due process, meaning they were warned and notified before seizures were carried out in accordance with regulations.

Affected vendors can go to the Commerce Directorate to regularize their situation and may even be subject to the regulatory committee’s provisions to determine if they can continue their street vending activities.
