Playa del Carmen, Mexico — The municipal government has announced the opening of the application period for the 2025 Municipal Sports Award, which seeks to recognize athletes, coaches, and promoters of physical activity in the city. The official launch was held at an event led by the City Council member and President of the Health, Education, and Sports Commission, Saúl Barbosa, and the Director of the Municipal Sports Institute, Alberto López.

The award is part of the municipal strategy to expand the offering of sports activities and strengthen social participation. In recent months, rehabilitation work has been carried out on sports courts and spaces in neighborhoods and subdivisions, with the goal of facilitating the practice of various disciplines.

During the presentation, Alberto López stated that the award not only recognizes athletic achievements but also the family and academic effort that accompanies athletes in their development.

"This recognition honors the sacrifice behind every athlete: the unconditional support of their parents and the tireless commitment of their teachers," he expressed.

City Council member Saúl Barbosa detailed the participation categories, which retain most of the previous categories and incorporate a new one: local coach in popular sports. He explained that this expansion allows for the recognition of those who work in sports training from community spaces.

The event was attended by Jacobo Arzate Hop, President of the Quintana Roo State Sports Commission, who emphasized that the progress in this area corresponds directly to the athletes, coaches, and parents. He added that, from the state level, the goal is for sports to contribute to social cohesion and the improvement of the population's quality of life.

Harold Chan López, a blind athlete and former national champion in para-athletics sprint events, also participated. He acknowledged the opening for adapted and Paralympic sports to have a presence in Playa del Carmen. He highlighted the importance of more people with disabilities finding opportunities for participation in organized sports activities.
