Playa del Carmen to Host Sports Events for Tourism Diversification

Playa del Carmen aims to diversify tourism with sports and cultural events

Playa del Carmen, MX. — In 2026, the government of Playa del Carmen will focus on organizing various events to attract so-called cultural and sports tourism.

Saúl Barbosa Heredia, president of the Education, Culture, and Sports Commission in Playa del Carmen, stated that this strategy aims to address the need to diversify the tourism offerings of this vacation destination.

According to the councilor, the objective is to avoid concentrating all activity on “sun and beach” tourism.

“As a municipal government, we are up to the task of what they are looking for. They are not only seeking white sand, beach, and sun; they are also looking for culture,” he added.

The councilor highlighted that in 2025, Playa del Carmen hosted several international-level sports and cultural events.

Among the events that stood out this year in the municipality are the Feria del Carmen (July) with concerts and culture; the Beach Volleyball World Tour (March) in front of Portal Maya; the Independence Day celebration with Grupo Frontera (September); the Ch’iibal Sound Fest (cultural/musical); and the First University Encounter (November) with sports and art.

He emphasized that these events generated an attractive agenda for both locals and the thousands of people who visit Playa del Carmen each year.

“We have already started to see international-level events in the sports arena, and that is good because sports tourism is a sector that must be leveraged, and in Playa del Carmen, we are very clear about that,” he concluded. (Agencia SIM)
