Cancún, Mexico — The idea of increasing parking fees in Cancún has resurfaced this week after the Association of Parking Operators in the municipality reiterated that their proposal to the Benito Juárez Government remains active, requesting permission to raise the usage cost by three or four pesos.

In an interview with the local press, a member of the association commented that the fee increase is an investment to cover necessary expenses to guarantee the safety of users who utilize parking lots in Cancún’s commercial plazas, such as the installation of:

  • Security cameras
  • Lighting
  • Covered parking
  • Technology for entry payment

Although the proposal has not been accepted by the government of Ana Paty Peralta, members of the Association have stated that Quintana Roo currently has the lowest parking fee in the state, at 13 pesos per entry, and the increase would first raise it to 15 pesos.

The Association also justified the desired increase by noting that, in collaboration with police, they have observed that free-use parking lots are very prone to robberies, endangering the material and vital integrity of users, whereas no incidents have been reported in paid lots.

According to comments on social media videos from journalists who interviewed the association, there is a division of opinions, with many opposing the cost increase for entry and use of the facilities, arguing that user safety cannot be guaranteed.

Others assert that it would be a good idea for parking lots in Benito Juárez’s commercial plazas to be remodeled or have better service options, such as improved technology and surveillance cameras, to make users feel safer when leaving their cars.
