TULUM — A family from the Mayapax neighborhood has reported an alleged case of police abuse by elements of the State Police, after a family gathering ended with the violent detention of two young men, one of them the son of the complainants.
According to the testimony of César Reyes, the father of one of the young men, the events occurred on Saturday night when several patrol cars arrived in the area and the officers attempted to detain two men, aged 20 and 26, who were in front of their home. The complainant stated that the officers brutally beat his son, who did not resist.
The police argued that the young men were relieving themselves in the public street, although this version of events has not been confirmed.
The parents, upon attempting to intervene to ascertain the reason for the detention, were ignored by the agents, who requested backup and proceeded to take the young men away in the patrol cars. According to the relatives' account, the units made several unexplained transfers, first to the Public Safety facilities, then to the Fire Department building, and finally to the office of the State Attorney General in Tulum.
Throughout this time, the family states they received no information about the whereabouts or physical condition of the detainees.
In the coming hours, videos are expected to circulate that—according to the complainants—show the moments when the young men were assaulted inside the police facilities.
"My son was savagely beaten by those who are supposed to protect us. We are not criminals, we are a working family," declared César Reyes, visibly distraught.
The head of the family called on the state governor and the competent authorities to investigate the events, review the actions of the officers involved, and guarantee the integrity of the young men.
To this point, neither the Quintana Roo Secretariat of Citizen Security nor the State Attorney General's Office has issued an official position on the case. However, neighbors in the Mayapax colony expressed their support for the affected family and demanded that the incident not go unpunished.
This new allegation of police abuse adds to other recent complaints in Tulum, where citizens have questioned the excessive use of force by state and municipal police forces. The community expects the authorities to conduct a transparent investigation to clarify the facts and, if applicable, sanction those responsible.
