Over a Thousand Tires Collected in Eco-Drive in Playa del Carmen

Volunteers are seated at a desk with banners promoting environmental campaigns for electronic waste collection and medication disposal on World Environment Day.

In a bid to combat environmental pollution, the local government led by Lili Campos, initiated the "Electrojornada, Medicatón and Llantatón" campaign. The event took place in the square in front of the new municipal palace. The tire collection drive, dubbed the Llantatón, successfully gathered over a thousand tires of varying sizes, with the majority being medium, small, and large.

While the collection of bicycle and motorcycle tires was minimal, all the tires were handed over to the Nómada company. This organization is responsible for the transportation and final disposal of these waste materials.

The first campaign of 2024, orchestrated by the Directorate of Environmental Management and Climate Change, also collected domestic and office appliances, along with expired medications. This initiative has successfully prevented over a thousand tires from being discarded in empty lots, where they could collect rainwater and become breeding sites for mosquitoes.

This campaign marks the fifth installment under the current public administration. Its primary goal is to prevent the improper disposal of tires, household electrical appliances, and medications. This contributes to a cleaner and safer environment for the community.
