Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The death of a municipal police officer and a newborn at the same hospital has sparked outrage among residents and security personnel, who allege serious medical negligence at the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) facility.
Francisco Hidalgo Chi Poot, 43, died on Sunday after spending five days hospitalized at IMSS Hospital General de Zona No. 18. The officer, who had served for over two decades, was admitted on Tuesday with gallbladder complications.
According to his family, he experienced constant pain and received what they describe as delayed and insufficient care during his stay. They allege that despite repeated requests for attention, he did not receive timely treatment, which they believe led to his death.
“He gave his life for the citizens, but when he needed help, he didn’t get it,” family members said angrily.
The case was not the only one causing concern. A day earlier on Saturday, the baby of a traffic officer’s wife — identified by the surname Mireles — was stillborn at the same hospital. The family, who had eagerly awaited the child’s arrival, now faces a devastating loss.
Both cases have raised alarms about the quality of medical service at this hospital unit, with allegations of possible omissions in care that could constitute negligence.
IMSS authorities have not yet issued an official statement about these incidents.
Meanwhile, family members, fellow officers, and citizens are demanding a thorough investigation and justice for the victims.
