Cancún — "Seventy years ago, our land faced one of the most painful moments in its history," expressed Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa, marking the 70th anniversary of the powerful Hurricane "Janet," which devastated Chetumal, "with our homes, streets, and the peace of families who lost everything."
Mara Lezama recalled: "That early morning, winds of more than 280 kilometers per hour split the life of this city in two and marked a before and after in our brief history."
However, she highlighted the strength of a noble people who emerged from the deepest darkness, who, even with tears in their eyes, rose to help, to lend a hand in solidarity, to share the little that remained.
The Governor emphasized that this spirit allowed Chetumal to be reborn from among the ruins and for hope to rise amid the pain. "Today we pay memory to those who are no longer with us, to the families of good character who resisted, and to those who gave their lives to save others," she emphasized.
"We do it with respect and with gratitude, because their courage and their dedication are the root of what we are and the inspiration to move forward," added the head of the Executive.
On this anniversary, Mara Lezama stated that 70 years later, the people of Chetumal "are once again writing the history of a rebirth, today with a new shine, with a humanist government with a feminist heart that returns to the people what belongs to the people, and that works every day so that no one is left out and no one is left behind."
"Today, with our heads held high and our gaze set on the future, together we are restoring the splendor to our city. Chetumal shines again because our capital is and will always be the heart of the south, the pride of Quintana Roo, and the eternal symbol of rebirth, because here, in this tenacious and fighting land, transformation moves forward," assured Mara Lezama.
