Cancún, Mexico — A new incident of harassment against an Uber driver by unlicensed taxi operators at Cancún International Airport was reported on social media this Sunday.
Incident Details
A video recorded by the Uber driver and shared on TikTok shows two men standing in front of his vehicle, blocking his path. The individuals are seen making phone calls while the driver narrates the situation, stating, “This man won’t let me pass; he’s standing in front of my car. Both of them are preventing me from moving.”
The exact date of the recording remains unclear, as does whether passengers were forced to exit the vehicle—a recurring issue in similar past incidents.
Background of Tensions
Last Thursday, a man was arrested for assaulting tourists at the airport while attempting to prevent them from boarding an Uber.
Águeda Esperilla, a spokesperson for Uber drivers, has previously stated that harassment by unlicensed taxi operators continues unabated. These individuals reportedly detain vehicles and report drivers to the National Guard to issue fines, despite lacking authority to do so.
