COZUMEL, Quintana Roo — The Mexican Navy (SEMAR) has issued an official statement following an explosion aboard a small ERI-class Immediate Response Vessel inside the Cozumel Naval Station on Tuesday.
According to communiqué 013/2025, the incident occurred during routine maintenance operations that involved handling fuel. While naval personnel carried out these standard procedures, an unexpected event triggered an explosion, leaving five service members injured. All were aboard the vessel at the time.
Navy personnel on site immediately assisted the wounded and coordinated their transfer by ambulance to the Naval Clinic in Cozumel. SEMAR reports that all five are receiving medical care and are currently listed in stable condition.
The Navy also confirmed that the local Naval Command is providing full support to the injured personnel, including medical follow-up and direct communication with their families.
Although the statement does not specify the exact cause of the explosion, SEMAR noted that internal safety protocols have been activated. An internal investigation is underway to determine what occurred and to ensure that future operational and maintenance procedures are carried out safely.
The Navy emphasized its commitment to safeguarding its personnel and preventing similar incidents during fuel operations and routine vessel maintenance.
