CANCÚN, Q. ROO — With the attendance of more than 500 actors from different parts of the country and the presentation of more than 27 plays, November will be a time of celebration in Cancún as it hosts the 45th edition of the National Theater Show, which will take place from November 5 to 16.
Preparations are advancing at a rapid pace with less than a month until the start, according to the head of Municipal Artistic and Cultural Development, Saúl Enríquez, who stated that this undertaking has represented "almost three years of joint work between local and federal institutions."
During the twelve days of the show's activities, more than 27 plays from different parts of the country will be presented. "We are 20 days away from starting, practically ready," he said.
The performances will take place in several theatrical spaces, both public and private, in Benito Juárez, including the Teatro Álamos, Teatro de Cancún, Teatro 8 de Octubre, and the Teatro de la Ciudad, including its new "Black Box," which will be inaugurated within the framework of the event hosted by the Cancún Institute of Culture and Arts.
The official emphasized the partnership with commercial theaters and the policy of free access: "It is an expanded scenic offering and completely free for the public."
The participation of approximately 500 national artists is expected on the stages, in workshops, master classes, and open talks. "The show is not only the plays, but also a space for exchange between artists, for experiences and reflection on what has been done during the year," Enríquez explained.
Complementing this scenic experience, a book fair specializing in theater, culture, and literature will be installed in collaboration with the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature (INBAL), Editorial Paso de Gato, and Teatro El Sótano. The fair will be located in the lobby of the Teatro de Cancún, in what was formerly a gallery, to facilitate access for attendees and encourage book purchases.
The program also includes workshops, master classes, and talks taught by specialists from various disciplines.
Bringing this experience to the Mexican Caribbean allows for the expansion of the geographical visibility of this discipline, attracts different audiences, and fosters scenic culture in a high-tourism zone, which can combine local appeal with a national event.
Some of the activities will take place in public spaces such as: Parque de la Paz, Parque de las Palapas, and Puerto Juárez; where street theater performances will be presented.
"It's going to be a November of culture," pointed out the official, who said that the show practically connects with other events that take place days before, such as Janal Pixán, which precedes the arrival of the participants but has become one of the most important festivities.
After three years at the helm of the institute, Enríquez assures that a team capable of "facing large-scale projects" has been consolidated and invited the public to watch for the general announcement of the event and the publication of the schedule, which will be made in a joint announcement with the National Theater Coordination.
