Cancún, Quintana Roo — A mototaxi was intentionally set on fire in the Villas Otoch neighborhood, second stage, on Saturday afternoon, resulting in a significant mobilization of emergency services. The incident caused only material damage, with no injuries reported.
The events occurred on Sacbé Avenue, just meters from Tules Avenue, in superblock 247. Through the 911 emergency number, authorities received a report of a fire involving a public transport mototaxi belonging to the Isla Cun union. The vehicle was parked outside a mechanical workshop.
According to information gathered at the scene, witnesses stated that an individual approached where the unit was parked and began verbally assaulting people inside the building, demanding they move the mototaxi to the public street. When they refused, the subject continued with threats and shouted that he would set the vehicle on fire.
Minutes later, the aggressor fulfilled his warning by throwing gasoline on the unit and then setting it on fire, causing flames to spread rapidly. After committing the act, the individual fled the site before authorities could apprehend him.
Personnel from the Secretariat of Public Security and the Heroic Fire Department responded to the location and managed to completely extinguish the fire, preventing it from spreading to other nearby vehicles or properties. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, so paramedic intervention was not necessary.
Once the situation was controlled, emergency services withdrew from the area, leaving the charred unit at the site along with representatives from the mototaxi union and the involved parties, who initiated the corresponding procedures with authorities to determine responsibility. Authorities are already investigating the incident to locate the person responsible for the fire.
