Cancún, Quintana Roo — Mototaxi drivers from two rival unions forcibly retook an illegal base on a major Cancún avenue on Friday, defying a recent eviction order and sparking a violent brawl that required police intervention and caused significant traffic disruption.
The drivers, affiliated with the Fesoc and Islacun unions, returned to Los Tules Avenue in the Villas del Mar neighborhood just one week after authorities from the Quintana Roo Institute of Mobility (Imoveqroo) cleared the area. The confrontation quickly escalated from a chaotic traffic blockage into a physical fight between the groups as they vied for control of the strategic pickup spot outside the Multiplaza Kabah shopping center.
“It’s a mockery of authority. They get removed one day and come back stronger the next. They don’t respect regulations and now they’re even fighting in front of families coming to the supermarket,” said an affected resident who requested anonymity.
Municipal police officers arrived at the scene to break up the fight and establish a security perimeter. However, their intervention was limited to maintaining public order, as transportation regulation falls under state jurisdiction. Notably, no Imoveqroo inspectors were present during the incident to enforce the previous eviction or apply sanctions for the drivers’ return.
The conflict highlights deeper issues within Cancún’s transportation system. The unchecked growth of mototaxis, which often operate in a legal gray area, has overwhelmed current regulatory capacity. The dispute between Fesoc and Islacun represents not just competition for passengers but a territorial struggle in one of the city’s peripheral areas with high transportation demand.
As of now, Imoveqroo has not issued an official statement regarding the drivers’ return to the Multiplaza Kabah area, leaving questions unanswered about potential future enforcement actions.
