Puerto Aventuras, Quintana Roo — A mototaxi driver was found dead inside his vehicle in Puerto Aventuras on Tuesday, prompting a response from emergency services and raising concerns among residents of the Playa del Carmen municipality.
According to preliminary reports, neighbors alerted authorities to an unconscious person inside a stationary vehicle in the Puerto Maya subdivision. Witnesses said the man, who was reportedly returning from his work shift, suddenly felt ill and collapsed in the mototaxi on Costa de Oro street. Bystanders approached to help but, upon realizing he was unresponsive, called emergency services.
Red Cross paramedics arrived at Puerto Maya and, after assessing the driver, confirmed he had no vital signs. Initial reports indicated the body showed no visible injuries.
Officers from the Public Security Department in Puerto Aventuras cordoned off the area to allow forensic experts from the Quintana Roo State Prosecutor’s Office to conduct an investigation and remove the body. Authorities said an initial review found no signs of violence, with the main line of inquiry pointing to a possible acute myocardial infarction as the cause of death.
Mototaxis Under Scrutiny After Regional Incidents
In 2026, mototaxis have been involved in several incidents in Playa del Carmen and nearby areas, primarily related to traffic accidents that have left people injured. One recent case occurred in February in the Villas del Sol neighborhood, where a mototaxi overturned after being hit by a car. The accident prompted an emergency response, though no serious injuries were reported.
In January 2026, an elderly woman died outside a Waldo’s store in Puerto Aventuras after collapsing inside a mototaxi. Her death was linked to a health issue, with no signs of violence reported.
In other incidents this year, these types of transport vehicles have been involved in crashes with motorcycles and private cars, resulting in property damage and, in some cases, minor injuries.
