Quintana Roo, Mexico — The transportation company Mobility ADO now employs women as drivers for its first-class bus service, a recent development on the Cancún to Playa del Carmen route. This initiative marks a significant step in the company's career development plan.
A New Career Path for Women
Nitzia Martínez, Human Resources Manager for Mobility ADO, shared that for the last couple of months, the company has had women driving its first-class buses. She specified that there are currently five female drivers operating on this service, with more women expressing interest in joining this career growth plan.
Martínez explained that for the past 15 years, the company has employed women to drive smaller units, such as vans and other types of service vehicles. The current move provides them with an opportunity to operate the larger, first-class coach units.
"We saw that it was time to give them an opportunity for growth, and we created a career plan within the company. We trained them to be on this first-class service, which, in addition to professional growth, offers them better salary conditions. We managed to create a work schedule that allows them to continue with their activities at home and with their children," she stated.
Positive Reception and Support
Martínez also commented on the public and internal response to the new drivers. "What we have observed is that the passengers have taken it very well. The truth is that they are performing very well in their work, and it is important to highlight that the group of [male] drivers has also embraced them," she explained.
She noted that these first five female bus drivers are paving the way and serving as an example for those who will follow, inviting all women who wish to join the company.
A Driver's Perspective
Maribel Salas is one of these new drivers. She shared that she has only been with the company for three years and has been operating the first-class units for just two months.
"I believe it is a great opportunity that is being given to us as women, and well, obviously they gave us very complete training. I started with a van and now I drive a bus. Obviously, the dimensions and the responsibility are greater, but we are doing it with great pleasure. I won't tell you it's easy, it does take effort, but they have trained us very well," she expressed.
