Houston, Texas — Mexico’s baseball team fought until the final inning but fell 5-3 to the United States in a Group B matchup of the 2026 World Baseball Classic at Daikin Park on Tuesday.

The Mexican squad mounted a late comeback attempt but couldn’t overcome the early deficit, despite showing they could compete with one of the tournament favorites. The loss drops Mexico to 2-1 in Group B, while the United States remains undefeated at 3-0.

The game turned in the third inning when U.S. captain Aaron Judge hit a two-run home run to right field, opening the scoring. Later in the same inning, Roman Anthony extended the lead with a three-run homer to left-center field.

Mexico responded in the top of the sixth inning when Jarren Duran hit a solo home run to left-center, cutting into the U.S. lead. Duran struck again in the eighth inning with his second home run of the game, bringing Mexico within two runs and energizing the vocal Mexican supporters in attendance.

With the score at 5-3, Mexico continued to pressure the U.S. bullpen in the final innings, but American reliever Garrett Whitlock closed out the game to secure the victory for his team.

Mexico had previously defeated Great Britain and Brazil in Group B play. The team must now beat Italy in their next game to advance to the next round as the group’s second-place finisher.
