Mexican Navy Rescues Fishing Boat After Capsizing Off Isla Mujeres

A fishing boat capsized and adrift in the sea near Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres, Mexico — The Mexican Navy rescued a fishing boat that capsized off the coast of Isla Mujeres on Friday after strong waves from a cold front overturned the vessel. All three crew members survived unharmed.

The 22-foot boat named “Guajirita,” operated by the Patria y Progreso cooperative, capsized near Punta Cancún while returning from a lobster fishing trip. Cooperative president Raziel Rivero said a powerful wave caused the vessel to overturn.

Naval officials launched a rescue operation after the Isla Mujeres Naval Search, Rescue and Maritime Surveillance Station received a report about lost communication with the boat and its three crew members. A rescue vessel from the station located the overturned boat between Punta Cancún and Punta Sur on Isla Mujeres.

Two crew members were found by another boat from the same cooperative, while the third swam to shore in Cancún. All three were in good health.
