Cancún, Mexico — Soldiers from the Mexican Army, conscripts of the National Military Service, and female volunteers are actively participating in sargassum cleanup efforts on Cancún’s beaches as part of the DN-III-E Plan activated by the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) in Quintana Roo.

The operations, which fall under the National Security Strategy, aim to protect the natural environment and preserve the region’s tourism appeal. Current efforts are focused on Playa Delfines, located along Boulevard Kukulkán in the hotel zone, where personnel are working in coordination with state and municipal authorities.

Comprehensive Cleanup with Preventive Focus

The operation includes multiple activities:

  • Manual and mechanical removal of accumulated sargassum along the coastline.
  • Collection and transport of the seaweed to authorized disposal sites.
  • Traffic control and safety measures to prevent accidents in work areas.
  • Drainage cleaning and unclogging of stormwater networks near the beach.
  • Preventive patrols in high-traffic tourist zones.

Sargassum not only diminishes the coastline’s aesthetic appeal but also poses public health risks and challenges for the tourism industry. Sedena has deployed trained personnel, specialized equipment, and logistical support to bolster remediation efforts.

The cleanup is a coordinated effort among federal, state, and municipal agencies, reinforcing a joint commitment to maintaining clean and safe beaches for residents and visitors alike.
