Mexican Caribbean Tourism Declines 3.7% in 2025 Compared to Previous Year

Cancún, Quintana Roo — Tourist arrivals in the Mexican Caribbean declined 3.7% during the first eleven months of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024, according to the latest report from the Quintana Roo Tourism Secretariat.

The state tourism agency reported that 18,232,059 tourists visited the region from January through November 2025, down from 18,927,209 during the same period in 2024.

Passenger movement at airports decreased by 3.38% during the same timeframe, while cruise ship arrivals showed a positive trend with 6,749,268 cruise passengers (visitors and crew) representing a 5.38% increase over 2024.

Destination Breakdown

The tourism agency provided detailed figures for individual destinations:

  • Cancún: 6,548,885 visitors (down 195,474 from 2024)
  • Puerto Morelos: 839,344 visitors (down 33,048)
  • Cozumel: 896,556 visitors (down 19,214)
  • Costa Mujeres: 1,098,828 visitors (up 12,527)
  • Isla Mujeres: 238,747 visitors (down 21,742)
  • Chetumal: 535,887 visitors (down 30,239)

Riviera Maya Region

The Riviera Maya region, which includes several popular destinations, saw overall declines:

  • Playa del Carmen: 1,485,711 visitors (down 94,212)
  • Tulum: 1,503,556 visitors (down 81,098)
  • Riviera Maya corridor: 4,224,834 visitors (down 181,103)

Other destinations also experienced decreases: Holbox dropped from 477,113 to 221,912 visitors, Bacalar from 227,072 to 221,912, Mahahual from 134,753 to 130,133, and the emerging destination Maya Kaan from 72,320 to 70,649 visitors.

Market Analysis

The report identified the top tourist markets for January-November 2025:

  • United States: 36.8%
  • Mexico: 36.2%
  • Canada: 10.5%
  • United Kingdom: 2.4%
  • Argentina: 1.7%

The region’s hotel infrastructure includes 1,475 hotels with 137,937 rooms. Archaeological site visits showed a minimal decrease of 0.04%, attributed to the reopening of some sites following improvements under the Archaeological Zone Improvement Program (PROMEZA), including the newly opened Ichkabal archaeological zone in January 2025.
