Cancún — The Mexican Caribbean is projected to receive more than 150,000 British tourists during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, according to information shared by United Kingdom officials at the 2025 World Travel Market (WTM) fair in London. This was reported by Pablo Casas Gómez, the Undersecretary of Tourism Promotion for the Sedetur.
He explained that, because the Cancún International Airport (AIC) is the central connection point with 16 host cities, the UK government, through the Foreign Secretary's Travel Alerts Selection, raised the issue of security for the protection of its nationals who will be traveling for the sporting event.
"The perception of security for the Mexican Caribbean in England and the rest of Europe is comparable to cities like Madrid or the perception one has of France as a country; therefore, security is good, coming to the Mexican Caribbean is very safe," he stated. "This was part of the information exchange with the English officials."
In this regard, he said it was agreed to keep channels of collaboration and data exchange open on security-related topics, as approximately 150,000 British citizens are expected to travel to Quintana Roo destinations. This is the reason for that nation's interest in having a complete overview of security in the destination.
He emphasized that the Mexican Caribbean has become an organic partner for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Consequently, there is interest from European governments in having certainty about the safety of their citizens, and with statistics, the Sedetur demonstrated that the incidence rate relative to the number of tourists is 0.1 percent.
