Mérida, Yucatán — Authorities in Mérida have launched cleaning and repair operations at central markets ahead of the rainy season, focusing on the city’s oldest and largest facilities where damage tends to be more significant.
Alfonso Lozano Poveda, technical secretary of the city’s Public Market Service, said crews are first working on the San Benito market, the largest with over 1,300 square meters of space that hosts hundreds of vendors and thousands of daily visitors.
Work includes waterproofing the roof and replacing domes, which officials expect to complete before the rains begin. However, visitors may still face some issues during precipitation like yesterday afternoon’s downpour.
Lozano Poveda noted that crews have already repaired roofs in the pork rind and fish sections by covering sheets with polyurethane to prevent water infiltration during heavy rains. Municipal Public Services teams are also cleaning storm drains, sewers, and grates, particularly in areas where water tends to accumulate.
Other locations receiving attention include the Cecilio Chi passage between 56th and 58th streets downtown, the García Rejón bazaar—where preventive work includes roof cleaning, waterproofing, and other area repairs—and the Lucas de Gálvez market, though this facility has received specialized attention in recent years and remains in good condition.
The Santiago and San Roque markets have received general maintenance, including replacing deteriorated sinks, repairing damaged countertops, and adding new water connections so vendors and customers can use them without problems.
