“President’s Bold Move: Maya Train’s Eco-Friendly Viaduct!”

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has stated that the construction of the Maya Train's section 5 has prioritized environmental protection in Quintana Roo. This has been achieved through the construction of an 80-kilometer elevated viaduct, designed to protect the region's cenotes, underground rivers, and caves.

Despite the cost of the elevated viaduct being up to three times higher than a ground-level project, the Mexican Government has chosen this route in order to preserve the local environment. The section 5 route, split into north and south, is set to be completed in September. It will include 111 kilometers of electrified double track and four stations: Cancún Airport, Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum. The first three of these stations are already open to the public.

Maintenance bases have been established in Puerto Morelos and Chemuyil to keep both sections of the route in optimal condition. The Secretary of National Defense (Sedena) has overseen the construction of 43.3 kilometers of railway track, a railway overpass, 17 wildlife crossings, six vehicular crossings, and the Puerto Morelos station in section 5 north.

Sedena is also constructing the Tren Maya Tulum Hotel within Jaguar Park. The hotel, which is 72.06% complete and set to open on September 7, will be located 3 kilometers from the Tulum station and 2.6 kilometers from the archaeological zone. It will feature 352 rooms, a pool, a temazcal, a gym, and a restaurant. As part of the project's environmental mitigation efforts, 10,000 trees will be planted in the area.

Construction company ICA was responsible for the Playa del Carmen station and section 5 south C, which connects Playa del Carmen with Puerto Aventuras. Azvindi Ferroviario, on the other hand, oversaw section 5 south B, linking Puerto Aventuras to Akumal. The company Mota-Engil Latin America participated in the construction of the Tulum station and 27 kilometers of section 5 south, including 21.6 kilometers of elevated viaducts. The company has also implemented a reforestation program, rescuing and relocating over 8,000 plants and germinating and planting 7,000 more.

Alstom Mexico is responsible for the Maya Train's railway, security, monitoring, and control systems. These systems are designed to ensure the train's functionality and operation in real time.
