Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa, Admiral Juan José Bernal Méndez, commander of the 5th Naval Region, and Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz, municipal president, have initiated preventative measures for the containment and collection of sargassum in Puerto Morelos for this year's season. At the event, it was revealed that the State Government is backing the establishment of the Integral Sargassum Sanitation and Circular Economy Center.
"Every year we face the challenge of sargassum, and that's why in Quintana Roo, we're taking decisive steps to protect our beaches, our economy, and the thousands of families that rely on tourism," explained Governor Lezama. These steps are key to the New Agreement for Welfare and Development.
Last year, around 40,000 tons of sargassum were collected through a coordinated effort between SEMAR, the State Government, municipal governments, and civil society. However, Governor Lezama warned that this year's sargassum season is expected to be even more intense. To combat this, the strategy is being bolstered with daily beach cleanings by 368 workers and the installation of 9,200 linear meters of containment barriers.
Governor Lezama emphasized that the goal is not just about cleaning, but also about finding a sustainable use for the sargassum. The new Integral Sargassum Sanitation and Circular Economy Center will enable efficient monitoring, management, collection, and transportation of sargassum, while also transforming it into an economic resource.
Currently, the annual cost of managing sargassum accounts for 11% of the local GDP, equating to 2 billion dollars. This new project aims to turn sargassum from an environmental liability into an economic asset by promoting new sustainable industries, creating jobs, and reducing environmental impact.
"Sargassum is a global challenge, but in Quintana Roo we're acting with a vision for the future. Thanks to everyone who works daily on this task. Let's continue to work together, taking care of our state and building a more sustainable future," concluded Governor Lezama.
