Puerto Aventuras, Quintana Roo — A tragic incident took place Sunday evening along Federal Highway 307 near Puerto Aventuras. A white SEAT Ibiza, traveling south at around 7 p.m., struck a man who had crossed into the road near the Chedraui entrance. The impact was so forceful the victim became lodged on the car’s roof and windshield. The driver continued for approximately 200 meters—citing poor lighting—before stopping at the town entrance where surveillance cameras are present. National Guard road units secured the scene until state prosecutors arrived to conduct their investigation. The victim, believed to be homeless, was pronounced dead on site and remains unidentified.

This accident adds to a troubling history of fatalities near Puerto Aventuras’ highway overpasses. At least 60 people lost their lives attempting to cross the busy stretch before community protests resulted in the construction of an pedestrian bridge and fencing was erected in the boulevard to discourage people from attempting to dart across the heavily trafficked highway.

Over the past few years, incidents involving vehicles careening off the Puerto Aventuras overpass seem to have become a regular occurance, the most recent reported just yesterday. These recurring incidents have reignited criticism over inadequate lighting, insufficient crosswalks, lack of bridge maintenance and weak enforcement of traffic safety in the area.

Following this accident, the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) is collecting surveillance footage, interviewing eyewitnesses, and preparing to review local lighting and road design to prevent future tragedies. National Guard officers have since re-established a presence at the site.

Local activists are renewing calls for official action, demanding improved infrastructure—such as enhanced lighting and stricter speed control—to protect vulnerable individuals crossing this stretch of the coastal highway.
