Puerto Morelos, Mexico — A 20-year-old man was shot and wounded on Friday night while walking along the Ruta de los Cenotes, at the intersection of Leona Vicario Avenue in Puerto Morelos.
The incident occurred at approximately 8:20 p.m., when individuals appeared at the location, fired a gun at the victim, and fled the scene. According to initial reports, the young man was walking when several gunshots were suddenly heard.
Witnesses stated that the entire event happened in a matter of seconds and that the young man fell to the ground, screaming in pain. Upon approaching him, they noticed he had two bullet wounds in his leg and immediately called the emergency number.
Municipal Police officers and paramedics arrived minutes later and provided the victim with first aid. Due to the severity of his injuries, the wounded man was placed in an ambulance and transported to the Hospital General Jesús Kumate Rodríguez in Cancún, where he remains under medical observation.
The area was cordoned off by police officers while personnel from the State Attorney General’s Office carried out the corresponding investigative procedures. Although the identity of the young man was not officially released, it was reported that he is a local resident who was allegedly returning home when he was attacked.
The identity of the shooter or shooters, as well as the motive behind the attack, remain unknown at this time. However, authorities have opened an investigation file and are reviewing footage from nearby cameras in an effort to locate those responsible.
