Authorities in Playa del Carmen have confirmed that a complaint has been filed against a resident who was caught on video brutally beating his dogs. The complaint has been registered with the Attorney General's Office (FGE) of Quintana Roo. The abused animals have since been rescued and the case is now being pursued to ensure justice is served.
Upon discovering the incident through social media, an inspection was immediately carried out. Further evidence of the dogs' mistreatment was found in another video, showing the dogs without any shelter, exposed to the sun and rain. This additional evidence further confirmed the allegations of animal abuse.
The incident took place in Privada Playa Calderitas, in Paseos Xcacel in Playa del Carmen. A neighbor who shared the video claimed that the dog was left outside all day without shelter or water.
Officials from the local government have emphasized their commitment to promptly addressing reports of animal abuse in Playa del Carmen. They are currently caring for the rescued dogs, who were found with severe injuries.
During the inspection, the owner was asked to surrender the dogs. Initially, he refused to give up both animals but eventually relented. The dogs are now under veterinary care. The smaller of the two dogs was found with a significant injury and was bleeding heavily.
In response to the evidence of animal abuse, local authorities filed a complaint with the Attorney General's Office. The charges have since been expanded. The local government has made it clear that such incidents will not be tolerated and that all reports of animal abuse will be thoroughly investigated.
Under local laws, if found guilty of animal abuse, the resident could face a minimum of two years in prison. Even if he avoids jail time, he will have a criminal record. The municipality can only impose administrative fines of up to 25,000 pesos, but the Attorney General's Office can enforce more severe penalties.
