Mahahual’s Lahun Tiku Boosts Sustainable Tourism

Governor Mara Lezama touring the Lahun Tiku tourist development in Mahahual

Mahahual. – Accompanied by partners from the Playa Tiku Investor Group, Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa toured the “Lahun Tiku” tourist development, where she was informed of the project’s progress being built in the Costa Maya, south of Mahahual.

During the visit, the Governor led the ribbon-cutting and unveiling of the commemorative plaque. Previously, investor Hernán Garza Díaz explained the complex’s characteristics to her. She visited the Cristo de Mar Chapel and learned about the progress of the core of the town for local artisans and artists, a space intended to promote the talent and traditions of Quintana Roo, where she greeted artisans from Xpichil.

The tour began at the “Manos Sagradas” (Union of Two Worlds) sculpture, a representative piece that symbolizes the connection between the Mayan cultural legacy and the sustainable development of the region.

Mara Lezama highlighted this new way of doing tourism, with order, with a social sense, a 30-year project where the objective is clear: that tourists, cruise passengers, come and enjoy the experience and take away a piece of what we are, of our culture, traditions.

“They will be able to buy crafts from Quintana Roo, but also from the entire country, they will learn about the ancestral trades of our carvers, of hammock weaving, of this extraordinary embroidery that is now cultural heritage,” added the Governor.

The first stage of the development, which spans from August 2024 to November 2025 and whose inauguration took place during the tour, includes the Penélope Beach Club, the core of the town with its chapel, the Manos Sagradas sculpture, and a cultural area with an amphitheater and reception building. The second stage, planned for 2026–2027, considers the construction of 25 hotel rooms, which will integrate a tourist offer combining cultural, recreational, and lodging spaces.

Miguel Ángel Lemus explained that Mahahual is beginning to receive new investments that will change the future of the inhabitants and new generations. He stated that this village generates jobs and invited artisans, cooks, all who want to join and take advantage of the new spaces and markets that make up the new core of the Mexican seaside town.

Accompanying Governor Mara Lezama during the tour were investors Miguel Ángel Lemus, Cayetana de Regil, and Felipe Martín del Campo; Municipal President Yensunni Martínez Hernández; and Tourism Secretary Bernardo Cueto Riestra.
