5.6 magnitude quake hits southern Quintana Roo near Guatemala

Chetumal, Quintana Roo — The first minutes of Friday, January 16, 2026, at exactly 00:08, southern Chetumal was surprised by a magnitude 5.6 earthquake. It is currently unknown if there was damage to homes or affected people. Local authorities have not yet made a statement.

The National Seismological Service reported the epicenter of Friday’s tremor at a depth of 10 kilometers and 317 kilometers south of Chetumal, Quintana Roo.

This earthquake adds to the multiple tremors that have hit the Yucatán Peninsula in recent weeks of 2025, where there has been speculation about a new tectonic fault due to the famous “seismic swarm”; mainly recorded in Ticul, Yucatán.
