Yucatán, Mexico — The State Coordination of Civil Protection (Procivy) reported that the National Seismological Service registered a magnitude 3.8 earthquake with an epicenter northeast of Ticul; the phenomenon was scarcely perceptible and did not represent a risk to citizens.

The State Coordination of Civil Protection (Procivy) reported that it verified citizen reports about the perception of a slight tremor registered last night, after 23:28 hours, primarily in municipalities in the south of Yucatán, where a light and scarcely perceptible vibration was reported.

Residents of Santa Elena, Ticul, Muna, Oxkutzcab, and Dzan indicated having perceived slight vibrations in doors, windows, and sheet metal.

According to the information gathered, only some people who were seated noticed these effects, which is why the phenomenon was considered practically imperceptible.

The head of Procivy, Hernán Hernández Rodríguez, confirmed that the National Seismological Service registered a magnitude 3.8 earthquake at 23:28 hours on October 9, with an epicenter 13 kilometers northeast of Ticul, at a depth of 5 kilometers, and coordinates of latitude 20.433° and longitude -89.411°.

Due to its low magnitude, the earthquake was categorized as scarcely perceptible and did not represent any risk to the population of the region. The reports received from Ticul, Muna, Oxkutzcab, Santa Elena, and Dzán confirmed that no damages were recorded.

Yucatán is located in a zone of low seismic activity, which is why this type of event is isolated and of scant magnitude, concluded Hernández Rodríguez.
