Cancún, Quintana Roo — A man was rescued Saturday afternoon after being swept away by a rip current while swimming at Gaviota Azul beach in Cancún’s Hotel Zone.

Lifeguards on duty spotted the swimmer struggling in the water and immediately went to assist him. When they pulled him from the sea, the man was unconscious, prompting them to activate emergency protocols and call for paramedics.

During the initial assessment, the swimmer began to regain consciousness and expelled water and foam from his nose and mouth, indicating he had inhaled water while being carried by the current.

Minutes later, civil protection paramedics provided medical care at the scene and detected he had low oxygen saturation. Due to this condition, he was transported by ambulance to a hospital for specialized treatment.

According to preliminary reports, the lifeguards’ prompt intervention helped stabilize the man, whose health condition was reported as serious.

Authorities reiterated their call for tourists and residents to follow lifeguards’ instructions and take precautions when entering the ocean, especially when rip currents are present.
