Chetumal, Quintana Roo — LGBT+ groups in Quintana Roo have called on electoral authorities and political parties to block attempts to misuse affirmative action quotas in the upcoming 2027 elections, aiming to ensure that candidacies reserved for priority sectors go to people who genuinely belong to those communities.
Wilbert Eleazar Rosas, a representative for this population segment, said clear and strict mechanisms are needed to prevent a repeat of practices he claims occurred in past elections, where some political parties allegedly simulated compliance with these quotas by nominating candidates who did not truly represent the LGBT+ community.
He argued that such actions deprive real opportunities for political participation from those actively part of these historically marginalized sectors.
Rosas, who also serves as a representative for this priority group within the Labor Party’s (PT) municipal committee in Othón P. Blanco, noted that with the 2027 electoral process approaching, LGBT+ community members have begun organizing to monitor the effective implementation of affirmative action. The goal is to prevent simulations and promote transparent processes that respect genuine inclusion and representation.
He said it would be timely for electoral authorities to push for reforms that establish stronger legal safeguards for allocating these quotas. Rosas emphasized that affirmative action is not only aimed at people from the LGBT+ community but also at members of Indigenous and Afro-Mexican communities, people with disabilities, and migrants, all seeking greater representation in public decision-making spaces.
He recalled that during the 2024 election, various irregularities were detected by some political forces, which he said involved registering candidates who did not meet the criteria for belonging to the groups the positions were intended for, particularly in the case of the LGBT+ community. This situation, he stated, caused discontent among activists and collectives, who considered it a practice that undermined the spirit of affirmative action.
In this regard, the representative stressed the need for the Electoral Institute and legislative bodies to work on creating clearer and verifiable guidelines that allow for confirming real belonging to these groups, always respecting people’s dignity and privacy, but guaranteeing the authenticity of nominations.
