Aiming to foster healthier eating habits among students in Quintana Roo, the Permanent Commission of the XVII Legislature is set to review a proposal to reform the State's Education Law. This proposal focuses on improving nutritional health in schools.
The proposal was put forward by deputies Karen Gabriela Secundino Vivas, Laura Elena Corrales Navarrete, Alicia Tapia Montejo, Susana Hurtado Vallejo, and Fermín Pérez Hernández. It seeks to revise articles 73, 74, and 75, section XII of article 157, and to introduce article 75 bis to the existing law, aligning these provisions with the General Education Law.
While the current Education Law already governs the sale of unhealthy foods in schools and encourages good nutrition, the proposal argues for further alignment of certain provisions. This is to ensure the complete elimination of advertising for unhealthy products within schools. The proposal also recommends applying these measures to all school food outlets, including canteens, shops, and vending machines, recognizing that not all educational institutions are school cooperatives responsible for food sales and distribution.
The aim of this legislative proposal is to transform the food environments in schools, promoting healthier futures for children and teenagers. Schools offer a unique opportunity to encourage good nutrition and appropriate development among students.
In addition, a proposal to add provisions to the Organic Law of the State Legislature, relating to the Coordination of the Legislative Technical Secretariat, was read. This proposal seeks to include the area and functions of the Coordination of the Legislative Technical Secretariat within the technical and administrative bodies of the Legislative Power, thereby strengthening the roles of the technical secretariats and the ordinary commissions.
